Salisbury Without a Car

Salisbury Without a Car

Salisbury might be the easiest cathedral city in England to visit without a car. The station sits minutes from the centre, the whole city is walkable, and even Stonehenge is reachable by bus. Here’s how it works.

Getting here

Salisbury Train Station has direct trains from London Waterloo (around 90 minutes), plus direct services from Bath, Bristol, Southampton and Exeter. From the platform you’re a five-minute walk from the city centre — and from our front door.

Getting around: you won’t need anything

Once you arrive, everything is on foot. The High Street, the Saturday market, the Cathedral and its Close, riverside pubs, restaurants, Elizabeth Gardens — all within a ten-minute walk of each other. This is a city built to medieval walking distances, and it still works that way.

Stonehenge without a car

The Stonehenge Tour bus runs from outside Salisbury station and takes you directly to the visitor centre, with commentary on the way — no driving, no parking, and combined tickets available with Stonehenge admission. It also stops at Old Sarum, the dramatic hilltop site of the original city, which you can alternatively reach on foot along the Avon Valley path if you fancy the walk (about 45–50 minutes each way).

Day trips by train

Salisbury’s position on two railway lines makes it a natural base: Bath’s Georgian crescents, Winchester’s cathedral (change at Southampton), the beaches and harbour at Southampton, and the market towns of the West Country are all day-trippable. The New Forest is also within reach by train towards Southampton for countryside walking among the ponies.

The car-free arithmetic

No car also means no parking to think about, no city-centre driving, and one less holiday cost. Staying somewhere five minutes’ walk from the station makes the whole equation work — arrive on a Friday train, leave on a Sunday evening one, and everything in between happens on foot.
